Corn Tortillas (USA): Newly tested for FODMAP content

We have recently completed the testing of corn tortillas from the USA.

Corn tortillas – 1 serve (3 tortillas) 57grams or (2 ounces)
LOW
Corn tortillas – ½  serve (1 ½  tortillas) 29grams or (1 ounces)
LOW

Corn tortillas have been given an overall rating of green.   The serving sizes specified here are low in FODMAPs and should be tolerated by most individuals with IBS.  Be careful not to add high FODMAP ingredients (onions, garlic) when preparing your dishes.

  1. Hello, is this corn tortilla made by only corn flour or a mix corn and wheat flour?
    Thanks.

    1. Hi Patty,
Good question. We are currently undergoing a system upgrade & we expect the next app version update to take place in 1-2 months. This update with include >100 newly tested foods & the corn tortillas. Please wait to see the next app update.
      Kindly, Emily

    2. We aren't supposed to eat much fresh corn, I think. So why can we eat corn in other forms, like tortillas and I think, corn tortilla chips? Just wondering. Is it possible that fresh corn is ok?

    3. Hi Kary,
Generally speaking, the FODMAP level of a food can vary depending on the ingredients & also manufacturing process of that food.
Sweet corn is high at 1 serve (1 cob) due to its high levels of oligos & polyols. But it is low at 1/2 serve (1/2 cob).
The corn tortillas is made out of corn flour, but also other ingredients are added, so this resulted in the FODMAP levels being considered low enough that it should be tolerated, hence the low FODMAP classification.
      Hope that makes sense.

  3. I have the same question as Julie above here, are these made out of corn only, or corn wheat mix?
    And what brand?

  4. Hi, I noticed that corn tortillas are still red/not allowed on the Monash Fodmap app. Are they still considered okay to eat in the portions stated above?

    1. Hi Emma, corn tortillas are displayed as 'green' in the app in the serving sizes specified. I am not sure why they would be showing up as 'red' in your app. Perhaps try updating your app as they should be green.

      All the best,

    1. Corn tortilla chips are deep friend. Also, read the ingredients. They might have high fructose corn syrup.
